It's great to see other people succeed, but sometimes we see their strengths and we only look at our weaknesses. Learning to run a 10K is a goal worthy of applause. It may feel daunting and like a heavy burden looming over you.

The prospect of running in a race can feel like a crazy ambition and perhaps you'll feel intimidated and overwhelmed. It can feel that way when looking at the big picture. To make it more tangible, it is best to divide up the task ahead into little chunks. That way your focus is more narrow and profitable.

Running my first race bubbled up some intense emotions. But, as I worked at it little by little and trained, every week was easier and I was able to accomplish my goals. Signing up also locks in a date that will help you stay on track as you work towards race day. This is how you become committed to your goal.

2. Training plan. Choose a training plan that will work according to how many weeks you have until race day. Depending on your fitness level, the week count will either be more weeks if you are starting new, or less weeks if you are a seasoned runner. A training plan breaks down your runs into chunks and slowly increases as you gain more fitness. Stick to the training and you will be ready for race day.

3. Hydrate. Remember to hydrate and perhaps you may need to drink an electrolyte beverage also. Water will keep you going.

4. Ask a buddy. Support is so important when you want to race. You need to have full support at home. A friend or family member to race with you will help your training even more.
